On July 23, 2003, Yale Swimming alumni met in Los Angeles for the Inaugural YSA West Coast Extravaganza. The day began at Manhattan Beach for a California-style brunch and day of relaxation by the ocean, and was followed up by a cocktail party in Westwood. Of course, the event was attended by plenty of Californians: Arge O'Neal '90 (who we learned is to thank for two 1990s institutions - the MTV Dance Party and Southern Fried Rock), Nikki Herron Kolhoff '94, Nick Ciriello '94, Jason Rosenbaum '95, John Barbie '98, and Brent Horstman '98 played hosts to the city, unwittingly or otherwise. Meredith Bryarly '01 took time out of her training schedule with Irvine NOVAquatics in Orange County to attend, while Lyn Askey Jutrovich '94 drove up from San Diego with her husband of five years, Chopper. Arriving from San Francisco were John Oram '92, Keith Truelove '94, and Tim Moffett '00. Younger alumni begged Johnny O of the secret of why everything was still reportedly his fault. Emily Fain '02 flew in during a short break away from her stint with AmeriCorps in Sacramento. And just to keep everyone honest, Jemal Smith '99 drove out from Las Vegas, while Mark Loftis '83, John Mendell '96, Brendan Mulvey '99, and Jeremy Fain '99 each flew out from New York.

Kristin Krebs '93 reminded us of this special announcement:
"There are two Yale Swimming & Diving Cups available at Mory's - a Men's and a Women's Team Cup. They are now in "regular circulation" at Mory's, which means that anyone can request them when they walk into the club with a member. Mory's phone number for reservation is (203) 562-3157. After taking most of the summer off, the Club is now open.

"I know that some people have known about this but may have forgotten. We encourage people to submit Morys' swimming stories when the cups have been used.... I have only heard of our one group inaugurating the cups, so we'd welcome any new stories!"

Sal Hazday '93 married Christina Cooper on September 13th in Chicago. Yale swimming alumni in attendence included Mike Faro '93, Andrew Skewes '93, and Kristin Krebs '93. After a brief stint in Chicago, Sal and Christina will settle in Miami, where Sal will be working with Ted Stedem '95 in the corporate department of Office Depot.

Anyone need a ride from Newport Beach to Puerto Rico? Give Cap'n John Barbie '98 a ring... John and his girlfriend, Ruth Arets, depart shortly on their 32' sloop La Gaviota from Marina del Rey, CA for "about six or seven months - however long it takes". They intend to sail through the Panama Canal and hope to spend some time in Costa Rica, where Ruth's parents live. John is taking a sabbatical from his trading position at Arcs Commercial Mortgage Co., based in Calabasas Hills, CA. Ruth is the President and CEO of Ruth Arets Trunks, a high-end trunk company that will be placing its product in Williams-Sonoma this season.

Pirate bootie ahead

Alexis Claiborn '94, now much Sweeter.

On May 10, Alexis Claiborn '94 married Andrew Sweet (Colgate '93) in Boxgrove, West Sussex, England. Matthew Roche '90, Lyn Askey Jutronich '94, Kathleen Hughes '94, Nikki Herron Kolhoff '94, and Jennifer Renzi '94 were in attendance. The happy couple have, in part, Yale aquatics to thank, as they were introduced in 1999 by Tom Richards '91 (water polo), also in attendance. "We got married in an old (12th century) church in a beautiful English village," wrote Alexis. "The wedding exceeded all our expectations, and Lyn even led her infamous 'Pump It Up' cheer at the reception." The Sweets currently make their home in London, where Alexis is pursuing a post-MSc degree in Counseling Psychology and Andrew works for a small private equity firm. They invite and encourage anyone passing through London to look them up (email: alexisc@aya.yale.edu).

Other than Alexis' wedding, it hasn't been all transcontinental trips for Kathleen Hughes '94 recently, though. The author and prep school teacher just published her first book, Dear Mrs. Lindbergh, published by W.W. Norton. Her novel concentrates on a lonely woman on an Iowan farm who becomes obsessed with Anne Morrow Lindbergh and writes her thousands of letters over a 15-year span. The novel opens and closes with the disappearance of the woman and her husband, an air mail pilot, when they are in their 80s. Writes Kathleen, "I like to think of the book as begging its way into the fine epistolary tradition of 18th century Continental works… just kidding. The promoters at Norton like to say it's a cross between Bridges of Madison County and I Was Amelia Earhart. Take both latter statements with a good long swig of drink, hit yourself on the head, and then yes, the book is something like that." Kathleen currently lives with her husband outside of Providence, RI. Her book is available at many fine bookstores and Amazon.com.

Alexis Lerner '95 and Andrew Katz were engaged on August 21, 2003 in the Hamptons. After meeting through mutual friends at the beach over a year ago, it was only fitting that Andrew take his fiancee back to the beach to pop the question. Alexis is currently an Assistant District Attorney for the City of New York, and Andrew does marketing for Pepsi. The happy couple, who live in Manhattan, are planning an August 2004 wedding celebration.

In the early morning of October 1, Dr. Geoff Emerson '95 and his wife, Dr. Lynda Kauls, welcomed Lily Kauls Emerson into the world in Baltimore, MD. She weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce, or about 51 pounds less than our diver friend was when he got his first drivers' license. Reports Geo of his first child, "Lily has been very nice for her mother since birth, when she arrived two weeks early and only put Lynda through five hours of labor." Dr. Emerson is a resident in Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins, while Dr. Kauls is a dermatologist at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children.

The newest Koppman, Benjamin

Dr. John Koppman '95 and his wife, Jennifer, are the proud parents of their first child, Benjamin Saul, who was born on September 6 in Manhattan. John and Jennifer met in Dallas while John was in medical school, and the family currently makes their home in Brooklyn Heights.

From former captain Mike Kostal '95:
"Ina and I are heading to China at the end of November to adopt our future son. He will be 9 months old when we go to China. He's currently in an orphanage in the Shanghai area." Mike met his wife during medical school in New Jersey, and is currently an internal medicine resident at University of California at San Francisco.

Edwin J. "Teddy" Stedem

"It'a a boy!" writes Ted Stedem '95. "Hillary and I are thrilled to announce the arrival of Edwin J. "Teddy" Stedem. He arrived at 4:48AM on October 29, weighing in at 8 lbs 5 oz. and measuring 22 inches. Mom, baby, and Daddy are all doing great. Attached is a picture taken a few hours after birth." After a stint in Los Angeles, the Stedem family currently resides in Delray Beach, FL.

Tricia Meyer '96 made sure you all knew: "Suzanne Heizer '96 and Tim Needham were married on September 19 in New York City. Family and friends joined them to celebrate at the New York City Fire Museum for a fantastic Latin-style fiesta, complete with salsa dancers, a pinata, and catering by a fantastic Mexican restaurant. Despite their obvious lack of land-oriented fine motor skills, many of the swimmers in attendance joined in the salsa lessons and danced the night away. We were sad Frank could not attend, as we would have loved to see him give the salsa dancers a run for their money. Suzanne looked great, and the couple looked extremely happy prior to departing for their Italian honeymoon.

"Yale swimmers in attendance spanned several years: Leigh Metcalf Ances '93 (and her husband Mike — their cute little boy stayed home that night, but the pictures they brought show a future heartbreaker, for sure), Jen Renzi '94, Alyssa MacMillan '95, Carrie Ivers '96, Missi Dalrymple '96, Casey Whalen '96, Leslie Rhee '96, Tricia Meyer '96, Stephanie Mulazzi Ruiz '97, Alison Jaffe '97 and Jeremy Fain '99. (Jeremy was dismayed to note that while the ratio of single women to men was absolutely in his favor, a large percentage of the single women happened to be the aforementioned Yale swimmers — lowering the appeal considerably, no doubt.)

"That same night, many of the swimmers continued the Yale swimming reunion by catching up with Adam Vann '95, John Mendell '96 and Tim Blake '96 (and Sean Peppard '95's sister Colleen) at a nearby bar. All in all, it was a great weekend for the Yale swimming alums in NYC. We welcome everyone to come visit us soon!"

Chris Lee '97 married Kathryn Wright in Boothbay Harbor, ME on June 7. The wedding party, filled almost entirely with Yale friends, featured Tim Blake '96 and John Mendell '96. Fellow water polo and swimming teammate Miguel Kremenliev '95 was also in attendance. After a short honeymoon in Mexico and California, the Lees returned to Boston, where Kathryn is an investment banker with Morgan Stanley and Chris is a second-year MBA student at MIT's Sloan School of Management.

On August 19, former water polo stalwart and political activist Pat Collins '96 married Cheri Oban in Beaulieu Garden in Napa Valley, CA. Teammates Keith Truelove '94, Nick Ciriello '94, Ivo Dujmovic '94, Tony Rosen '95, and Ian Bedford '97 made the trip, while Adam Williams '96 got stuck in Hurricane Isabel's path. Some things never change, reported Keith: "Ivo called me on Thursday the 11th asking, 'Hey Nub, what time are you going to drive up TOMORROW?' Goalies get hit in the head with the ball quite a bit...". It should be noted that the last time this group went to a wedding, Nubber got the group to Derek Hausladen '94's wedding a half-hour late. After honeymooning in Tahiti, the Collins will return to San Francisco where Pat works in private equity.

Missi Dalrymple '96 writes:
"I just moved back to New York City after finishing up my MBA at Harvard in June. I'm starting up a small jewelry company called Mila Lomi — the milalomi.com site will launch soon, just in time for holiday gift buying, so please visit the site if you're interested! Yale swimmers will, of course, get a friends and family discount! Jeremy Fain '99 designed a beautiful site and various Yale swimmers have been some of my best customers. I'm grateful to all of them for helping me get started — it's a great example of the enduring bonds we swimmers share. In my spare time, I'm consulting for the Mellon Foundation on an arts initiative they are launching next summer, which has been very rewarding."

Former women's captain Stephanie Mulazzi Ruiz '97 wrote in, "I am now the proud 'mom' of two fiesty pugs, Olivia and Maggie. My husband Juan and I began our collection in December, and they are almost as goofy as Sukbin Song '96. We play in the lobby of our Manhattan apartment building with Jeb Slowik '94 and his dog, Murphy, every now and then...who knew we'd be so lame just 6 years out of school? Other than that, I hope to see some swimmers at my first guitar performance this week. My teacher had the bright idea to put a bunch of us on stage for the first time. After only 7 months of lessons, I'll probably be the worst one there, but hey... it's at an Irish pub so I'll have a pint or two to prepare myself."

As foreseen by the "Most Likely to Own a Pink Flamingo" category of his middle school yearbook, Brent Horstman '98 recently purchased a 3 bedroom house in Redondo Beach, CA, less than a mile from the sand. Brent and John Barbie '98 recently found the local break and spent the previous weekend discussing Barbie's senior thesis on the portrayal of the surfer in American cinema while playing euchre and watching Point Break. Brent just entered his third year as a Banking and Finance attorney at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter and Hampton in downtown Los Angeles. He invites all interested alums out to Redondo to check out his unfurnished living room and collection of fine surf waxes.

Former captain David Antonelli '98 married Angela Parks on August 9th in their hometown of Marietta, GA. The wedding party included Sukbin Song '96, Jeremy Delicino '98, Thomas Kitteridge '98, Jeremy Fain '99, and Alex Hoffman '00. John Mendell '96, Adam Williams '96, Chris Cushman '97, and Jemal Smith '99 were also in attendance. Naturally, the swimmers were prominently involved in the superb festivities: Jeremy Fain used a shopping cart as transportation, John danced all night with the flower girls, Sukbin muscled his way to catch the garter belt, and Brent Horstman '98 never showed up. The Antonellis honeymooned in Europe before returning to Durham, NC, where David is a second-year MBA student at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.

Lindsay Wolter '00 says hello:
"I've finally entered the real world!! I graduated from the University of Miami (where Danielle Baron '03 just began law school) with a J.D. and a Masters in Marine Policy. I spent the summer studying for the Illinois bar exam, where I ran into Dan Goldberg '00 on the stairway at the BarBri lecture! As for now, I've begun work at Seyfarth Shaw, a law firm in Chicago. I work in the Environmental, Health & Safety practice group and have been enjoying every minute of it thus far. My first assignment was to attend a Cubs game with some clients, so I really can't complain. Go Cubs!" Sorry Lindsay!

Finally, Chris Bradford '00 turned up at Stanford Graduate School of Business and contributed this gossip: "Henry Tibensky '03 has been spotted in the pages of Cosmopolitan, showing off the body he began to develop in Alex Hoffman '00's 'Lane 5 Training Group' during the 1999-2000 season. His modeling career seems to be taking off - not bad for a guy whose nickname was "Tubby". Speaking of Hoffman, he is a first year at Kellogg and is considering starting a triathlon group there. Former Yale swimmers are wondering if Alex will encourage everyone to skip a week of training leading up to their biggest competition, as he was known to do between HYPs and EISLs."
