Writes in Bill McMaster '62 (Capt.): "I am in So Cal, congested but I can swim outside year round. For the past four years I've been back in the water almost daily. Have limited myself to one hour and 4000 yards a day and no competition. I am still practicing Orthopedics and teaching half time at Univ. Cal, Irvine. I visited former teammate Dave Burgess and his wife, Cami, in the Chicago area in November for a great evening at their lovely home. I also see Roger Anderson '59 on occasion at the sports club and professionally, to patch him up so he can continue swimming and surfing around the world. I enjoyed hosting a current swimmer, Heidi Krause '03, over the summer in the clinics at Children's Hospital. She is interested in a medical career."

Guy Stone '75 asks, "Any chance we could get some alums to send in Masters swimming times? It would be a good way to drum up some friendly competition.". Great idea, Guy - let's hear from everyone. So far, Josh Woodruff '93 is currently training with Curl-Burke in D.C. to try and break the 30-34 Masters 500 Freestyle national record of 4:29, while Jeremy Delicino '98 will represent UCLA Masters at this May's USMS Short Course Nationals in Tempe, Arizona.

Edward West JE '79 wrote in to introduce our family (pictures at right) to his: "I note from looking at the website that there's a paucity of news about swimmers from years before the late '80's and '90s, which is too bad. But maybe they're like me - overwhelmed with work and kids (we have 3 under 6 years of age) or life in general, and not swimming much, if at all. The last training I did was pre-children in 1997, and my last race was the June 1997 Chesapeake Bay 4.4 mile Swim (1:45 something; non wet-suit division) while training with the Ancient Mariners USMS team from Montgomery County MD. And I was a 50/100 free sprinter at Yale!! Open water swimming is so much easier - NOT!!!!!!"

Former Yale distance king Mark Loftis '83 was inducted into the Branford (CT) Sports Hall of Fame on November 22. At Branford High, Mark swam without losing a race in 84 consecutive duel meets, led his school to two state open championships, and was named to the All-State teams during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. At Yale, he set records in the 500 free, 1,000 free, and 1,650 free as a four-year letter winner from 1980 to 1983. Currently, Mark is the Head of the Mathematics Department at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx and resides in Manhattan.

Jason Rosenbaum '95 hit the suggestion box: "Great site, but you need to give it that special something. I suggest perhaps a flash game... something where you get to role play and be any Yale swimming alumni and negotiate him/her around campus (I've got dibs on Sukbin Song '96) or maybe a version of Kaboom where Frank has to catch pizzas being dropped from Yorkside." Rosie's brainchild is in development.

Father Rosie? Nope, just an uncle for now

Another Californian, Eva Zakrzewski Moore '94 wrote in to give us a quick summary on her life since graduation: "After returning to California, I was "found" on a beach and had a 2 year contract with Baywatch - doing all the stunts, swimming, and day player work. I went on to star in a pilot called the Kindred, based on vampires in San Francisco, which was cancelled by Fox, then I segued into commercial acting and modeling. I have done over 10 national commercials and 15 regionals, as well as had the opportunity to model worldwide—Fiji, the Caribbean, Europe, Etc. I got divorced in 2001 and now have a new Jack Russelll, Savvy, and am continuing currently with the modeling and acting, and started a private tutoring business for kids grades 4-12, which is going well."

In other sports accomplishments, Nicole (Molzahn) DeBoom '94 recently finished fourth in the International Triathlon de Santos in Santos, Brazil. Nicole is one of the U.S.'s top triathletes and is a hopeful to make the country's 2004 Olympic team. She has also finished Top 15 in the past three Hawaii Ironmans. See Nicole's fan site here.

Look who chimed in—none other than Kathleen Hughes '94: "Here's my deal: I'm in Rhode Island, fourth year now, loving it, water and open space and old stuff and big and small cities relatively close by. Doing a fair amount of running—the Sugarloaf Marathon last May and probably Boston this April. Almost did a two mile open water "Swim the Bay" that would've scared the holy shi-ite out of me, but other events intervened. Still, in training for it a bit, I gained new appreciation for the Brown pool and Master's swimming. My latest one year gig is teaching English to 9th, 11th, and 12th graders at Providence Country Day school, plus coaching cross country, which gave me a new appreciation for (the desire to hurl) kickboards. I've been writing fiction pretty consistently since Yale, and I've finally sold my first novel to WW Norton—it'll be out in Dec. 2003. "Dear Mrs. Lindbergh" is the likely title. Got married, too, like everyone else, it seems, in June 2002. I met Tim Groves on a blind date my second month in RI. He works for a design firm that does websites for independent schools and he's in law school, determined to be a bleeding heart environmental lawyer. Our Canadian camping honeymoon gave me a new understanding of Deet, and why it's not an aphrodisiac. Good small world piece—his cousin is a classmate of Missi Dalrymple '96's at Harvard Business School. Anyway, it was a small wedding in remote Michigan but Alexis Claiborn '94, Jen Renzi '94, and Emily DeRiel '96 generously made the trek."

On the weekend of January 17-20, several Yale alums descended upon Las Vegas to catch up and make a small fortune...out of a somewhat larger one. Adam Vann '95, Sean Peppard '95 and his wife Sarah Rathke, Geoff Emerson '95, wife Lynda Kauls, and his brother Vaughn, John Mendell '96, Tim Blake '96, Brian Hall '97 and his wife Edie Sonne Hall '97, Kevin Gronberg '97 and his girlfriend Katherine Hennessey '97, John Barbie '98 and his girlfriend Ruth Arets, and Jeremy Fain '99 braved the three-day festival. Everyone was happy to see Jemal Smith '99, who moved back to his hometown of Vegas after graduation. Since then, Jemal has founded one of the only diving teams in the area, Southern Nevada Divers, in order to give the youth of his community a positive focus after school. More reunions (editor's note - hopefully not in places where gambling is sanctioned) are hoped for the future.

Head Diving Coach Tom Stebbins '96 helped guide the UCLA Women's Swimming and Diving team to its second Pac-10 Conference title in three years. After returning the core of his squad from their impressive showing at the NCAA Zones last year, they're looking forward to another successful championships performance.

A few recent grads have had their image in print recently: Wharton second-year Leslie Rhee '96 appeared in a December 2002 IBM advertisement placed in the Wall Street Journal and Forbes magazine. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times published a front-of-the-sports-page story on Erika Aklufi '98, who finished fifteenth (5th U.S. woman) in the Los Angeles Marathon with a time of 3:12.40. Read about Erika's remarkable ascent up the U.S. marathon scene here.
